Lạng Sơn smart border gate pilot project targeted for completion by 2027

Vietnam is advancing a pilot project to develop a smart border gate in Lạng Sơn province, with the first phase targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2027. During a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Gia Túc, officials emphasized that the project is a national priority aimed at facilitating trade, reducing logistics costs, and preventing commercial fraud.

The initiative is expected to improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural and aquatic products by shortening customs clearance times. Implementation involves synchronized connectivity between physical infrastructure, databases, legal frameworks, and operational processes.

In collaboration with China, a memorandum of understanding has been signed to establish regular exchange mechanisms. Successful trials of automated guided vehicles (AGV) and intelligent guided vehicles (IGV) have already been conducted at the Hữu Nghị - Hữu Nghị Quan international border gate pair. These tests included the safe transport of 71 shipments using AGVs. Additionally, infrastructure upgrades, such as expanding specialized roads from 4 to 6 lanes and progressing toward 14 lanes, are underway to support the smart gate operations.
