LNR announces compensation and schedule changes for 2027 Rugby World Cup

The Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) has announced significant adjustments to the 2027-2028 season to accommodate the Rugby World Cup in Australia. To mitigate the impact of international players being absent for nearly half the season, the LNR will provide clubs with compensation of 1,900 euros per day per international player. This financial support, fully funded by the League, could reach 6.4 million euros if the French national team reaches the semi-finals.

The Top 14 schedule will be heavily modified, with eight matchdays scheduled before a two-week break during the tournament, resuming on November 13. The Pro D2 will also face disruptions, with its first ten matchdays occurring during the World Cup.

These changes have raised concerns regarding sporting equity. Coaches have warned that major clubs with high numbers of international players, such as Stade Toulousain—which could lose between 20 and 25 players—may struggle to remain competitive. There are fears that the prolonged absence of elite players could jeopardize the survival of top-tier clubs and disrupt the traditional hierarchy of the championship.
