Lo Barnechea begins final eviction phase in Quebrada Las Zorras
Authorities in Lo Barnechea will begin the final stage of the eviction and recovery process in Quebrada Las Zorras, located in the Cerro 18 sector, starting Monday, October 5. The operation, which is scheduled to run through October 7, will be carried out by the Control de Orden Público (COP) personnel of the Carabineros de Chile.
The intervention aims to remove the remaining 30 to 32 homes in the settlement. This follows a gradual process initiated in 2024 that previously saw the voluntary departure of 29 families and the dismantling of 36 homes in late 2025. At its peak, the settlement contained 132 homes and 326 residents.
Lo Barnechea Mayor Felipe Alessandri stated that the measure is necessary to protect residents, noting that the area is unsafe. According to the Santiago Metropolitan Regulatory Plan, Quebrada Las Zorras is classified as a natural flood risk zone. Additionally, technical reports from the Santiago Fire Department have warned of fire hazards and difficulties for emergency vehicles to access the area.
