Léo Índio seeks permanent asylum in Argentina
Leonardo Rodrigues de Jesus, known as Léo Índio, a relative of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has requested permanent political asylum from the government of Javier Milei. Currently residing in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, Rodrigues de Jesus is accused of involvement in the 2023 attempted coup in Brasilia and is facing an arrest warrant in Brazil.
Rodrigues de Jesus stated that while he and others have been granted temporary asylum through the National Commission for Refugees (Conare), the lack of national identity documents prevents them from accessing formal employment. He requested permanent status and documentation to allow asylum seekers to integrate and work legally.
Separately, Argentine media reports have alleged that the Milei administration is providing monthly payments to Brazilian fugitives. These unverified claims suggest that hundreds of individuals are receiving funds to cover living expenses, though neither the Argentine Ministry of the Interior nor Conare has confirmed such payments.
