Lobau forest cleanup begins after wildfire damages 18 hectares

Cleanup and safety operations have begun in the Lobau forest area near Eßlinger Furt following a wildfire on August 4. The fire caused lasting damage to approximately 18 hectares of land through flames and intense heat.

To ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, the City of Vienna Forestry and Agriculture Service has begun felling individual trees located along paths that were weakened by the fire. Officials noted that heat can damage a tree's internal structure and root system, making them unstable even if they appear healthy externally.

Authorities are currently using drones to survey the damage and measure the affected area. While the full extent of the impact on the soil remains unclear, the primary goal is to allow nature to regenerate itself. Officials will monitor the area through the spring to see which trees recover, while remaining vigilant against the spread of invasive species like goldenrod and tree of heaven.
