Local authorities in Peru issue environmental fine and oversee infrastructure repairs

In Chimbote, the Municipalidad Provincial del Santa (MPS) imposed an 11,000 soles fine on Integratel Perú S.A. (Telefónica Movistar) for improper waste disposal. Inspectors found solid waste accumulated at the intersection of Jirón Estudiantes and Jirón Tumbes, near Plaza Miguel Grau, outside of designated hours. The company's administrator attributed the incident to staff error or ignorance, and the waste was subsequently removed by the company.

In Piura, EPS Grau S.A. has begun repairing a large sinkhole located at the intersection of Calle Moquegua and Avenida Sullana in the historic center. The repair follows interventions by the Defensoría del Pueblo, which had flagged the hazard since May 2026. The sinkhole was caused by structural wear and sewage leakage, posing a risk to pedestrians and drivers.
