Local authorities in Romania address stray dog management issues
Municipalities in Romania are implementing different strategies to manage stray dog populations and animal welfare. In Buzău, the local administration plans to establish its own service for managing stray dogs following a court decision that annulled a previous contract with Urbis Serv. This legal setback left the city without a capture service for five months, during which time several residents reported being attacked by dogs. As a temporary measure, the city has entrusted the task to a specialized operator focused on aggressive animals until a new concession contract can be tendered.
In Suceava, specifically in the Itcani neighborhood, efforts are focused on sterilization and microchipping. Local representative Roxana Ciornei of the Casa lui Patrocle Association reported that owners are receiving warning notifications and have 30 days to comply with sterilization requirements through free services. Teams are also conducting door-to-door microchipping, providing assistance to elderly or immobile residents to ensure compliance and prevent the uncontrolled breeding of dogs.
