Local commerce and entrepreneurship drive activity in Quito and Guayaquil

In Ecuador, local commerce and entrepreneurship initiatives are driving economic activity in urban public spaces. In Quito, traditional Sunday markets in plazas and parks like San Francisco and El Ejido serve as vital gathering points for informal vendors. Many of these trades are family legacies; for instance, some vendors continue ancestral crafts like making cotton candy to support their families and education.

In Guayaquil, a recent entrepreneurship fair at Plaza Pilsener in the historic Las Peñas district showcased 30 local businesses supported by ÉPICO EP. The event aimed to stimulate the local economy and tourism through the sale of artisanal products. Participants reported that such municipal support provides essential opportunities for growth amidst national economic challenges, allowing small businesses to operate without significant initial investment.
