Local community archives preserve Dutch village history

Local community archives and historical societies in the Netherlands are highlighting regional heritage and volunteer history.

In Hoogland, the Historical Circle Hoogland (HKH) is documenting the legacy of the Hooglandse Hulpdienst. Founded in 1975 by Tilly Peet-Bakker and Annie Schimmel, the volunteer organization provided essential support to residents, including grocery shopping, household assistance, and childcare, acting as a community safety net before being absorbed into a larger foundation.

Meanwhile, the Afferden Village Archive continues to document local developments, including community initiatives, historical commemorations, and local infrastructure updates such as the construction of a fauna passage in Bleijenbeek.
