Local community initiatives launched in Bruges and Zottegem

In Bruges, a long-standing New Year's Eve event for individuals facing loneliness, mobility issues, or financial hardship is moving to a larger venue. For fifty years, volunteers have organized this gathering, which this year will be held at the Sint-Lodewijkscollege in Sint-Andries. The event, managed by Open Balie and De Lier Brugge, aims to host approximately 180 guests and will feature a warm meal instead of a cold buffet. Registration is required between December 1 and December 19.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Zottegem is seeking volunteers to form a local crisis corps. This team will provide logistical and practical support to professional emergency services during emergencies such as floods, power outages, or extreme heat. Volunteers may assist with delivering supplies to isolated citizens, helping in care facilities, or assisting with cleanup efforts. Information sessions for interested residents aged 18 and older will be held in November at the Ridderzaal in the Castle of Egmont.
