Local controversies arise over tree removal in Argentina and Uruguay
Local authorities in Necochea, Argentina, and Durazno, Uruguay, are facing scrutiny following controversial tree removal operations in their respective jurisdictions.
In Necochea, Adrián Furno, the Secretary of Planning, Works, and Public Services, addressed the City Council regarding the cutting of plane trees in front of the Lawyers' Association. Officials stated the intervention was necessary because the trees were affecting local infrastructure. However, environmental groups and residents have demanded access to the full administrative file (expediente 3538/26) to verify the technical criteria used for the authorization.
In Durazno, councilman Gabriel Díaz Landoni denounced the removal of heritage trees in public plazas, specifically citing Plaza Rodó. He alleged that trees were cut down indiscriminately, including healthy specimens, without the technical reports required by local ordinances. While acknowledging that some trees cause damage to nearby homes via roots or debris, Díaz Landoni questioned why healthy trees were removed during early morning hours without clear justification.
