Local council leaders meet to advocate for Local Council Act

The Association of Chairpersons of Municipal, City, and District Councils of Korea held its first provincial and city representative meeting of the 10th term at the Seoul Garden Hotel. The meeting focused on establishing the association's operational direction and strengthening the independence and expertise of local councils.

Key leadership appointments were made during the session, with Lee Sang-ju elected as the chairperson for the first half of the 10th term. Kim Nam-won, chairperson of the Geomdan-gu Council, was appointed as a vice chairperson, tasked with bridging the gap between local councils and the central government.

A primary agenda item was the urgent call for the enactment of the ‘Local Council Act’. Participants, including Kang Sang-tae, chairperson of the Gyeonggi-do Municipal Council Chairpersons Association, emphasized that national cooperation is essential to elevate the status and role of local legislatures. The assembly also discussed improving administrative organizational systems for local councils and approved support measures for residents in areas declared as special disaster zones due to heavy rainfall.
