Local council members in South Korea call for improved administrative transparency
In separate regional council sessions, lawmakers in Boryeong and Guri have raised concerns regarding administrative practices and consumer protection.
In Boryeong, Council Member Kwon Seung-hyun urged the city to implement measures against illegal or deceptive promotional halls, often referred to as ‘ttatdabang’. These venues reportedly use free gifts and performances to lure elderly citizens into purchasing overpriced or unverified health and household products. Kwon proposed establishing a joint public-private reporting system, providing preventative education through community centers, and enacting ordinances to protect elderly assets and local small businesses.
In Guri, Council Member Yeon Ju-hyeon criticized the city's method of handling agreements, noting that some were signed before being reported to the council. Yeon highlighted discrepancies in how school complex construction agreements were framed, arguing that while the city made concrete promises, it described the resulting responsibilities as merely ‘declarative’. The council member demanded stricter adherence to prior reporting procedures and more detailed cost estimates in future agreements to ensure fiscal accountability.
