Local councils approve neighborhood and street name changes in Turkey and Cyprus

Local councils in Turkey and Cyprus have moved forward with decisions to rename specific locations, reflecting local historical and cultural shifts.

In Mustafakemalpaşa, Turkey, the Municipal Council has decided to change the name of Döllük Neighborhood to Kafkas Neighborhood. The move follows requests from residents, particularly younger generations, to better reflect the area's history as a settlement founded by Caucasian immigrants. The change now awaits formal approval from the Mustafakemalpaşa District Governor's Office and the Bursa Governor's Office.

In Paphos (Baf), Cyprus, the Municipal Council voted to rename Kemal Atatürk Street in the Mutallo neighborhood to ‘Memory and Hope Street’. Mutallo was historically a Turkish Cypriot neighborhood prior to 1974. The decision was met with abstentions from the AKEL and DIKO political parties, who requested consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before proceeding. AKEL expressed concerns regarding the timing and consistency of renaming streets with Turkish historical significance.
