Local councils debate housing and land use developments
In Mt. Pleasant, the City Council has postponed a decision regarding a proposed 62.4-acre housing development. Council members expressed reservations about a 25-year development agreement that would govern the project's phases. Concerns were raised by Mayor Michael Olsen and Councilman Cade Beck regarding the agreement's duration and its potential to bypass existing city ordinances related to short-term rentals, accessory dwelling units, and setbacks. The council intends to meet with the developer to refine the agreement before revisiting the matter.
In Carrboro, the Town Council approved the rezoning of 15.5 acres on Rogers Road to facilitate the construction of 86 townhomes. Sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, the project aims to provide affordable housing, with at least 55 percent of units reserved for households earning 80 percent or less of the area's median income. While the council approved the plan, some residents voiced concerns during public hearings regarding stormwater management, potential flooding from increased impervious surfaces, and pedestrian safety on Rogers Road.
