Local councils in Argentina pass new municipal ordinances

The Deliberative Council of San Miguel de Tucumán has approved a project to eliminate various municipal taxes, contributions, and fees. Led by President Fernando Juri, the reform aims to simplify procedures, digitize processes, and improve the relationship between the municipal administration and residents. The measure modifies the Municipal Tax Code and the Annual Tariff Ordinance, removing charges related to tax clearance certificates, fiscal statements, permits, and inspections. The Finance Commission defended the move, stating the affected items would not significantly impact municipal revenue while reducing bureaucracy.

In San Martín, the local council has reversed a previous ordinance that prohibited the use of common plastic bags and styrofoam containers. Following protests from coffee shop owners and merchants who argued the ban threatened their livelihoods due to a lack of affordable alternatives, a new ordinance was introduced by Councilwoman Agostina Zamarián. The revised measure shifts from a mandatory ban to promoting the voluntary and progressive adoption of sustainable, reusable, or biodegradable alternatives, ensuring businesses maintain freedom in choosing materials for their activities.
