Local councils in Australia address lease policies and waste fees

Wodonga Council has deferred a decision on a draft lease and licence policy following concerns regarding potential rent increases for community groups. The proposed policy would categorize tenants into three groups: commercial tenants paying market value, not-for-profits paying $500 annually, and high-earning organizations paying a percentage of market rent. The Wodonga Lions Club opposed the plan, noting that the increase from their current nominal rent would create a financial burden. Councillor Ron Mildren argued that the council should act as a custodian for the community rather than a traditional property owner.

In Wagga Wagga, councillors have agreed to delay a 50 per cent increase in out-of-region solid waste disposal charges for the neighbouring Junee Shire Council. While the new charge is set for implementation on October 1, 2026, Junee Shire Council will continue to pay current rates until July 1, 2027. Additionally, Wagga Wagga Council endorsed plans for stormwater infrastructure upgrades and authorized the formal dedication of a section of Railway Street for public use.
