Serua Island residents reject relocation despite climate threats

Residents of Serua Island in Fiji are refusing attempts to relocate their village despite increasing threats from rising sea levels and cyclones. While the island offers scenic views and rich fishing grounds, the community faces significant environmental risks, including waves that flood homes and erode the coastline.

A concrete sea wall serves as the primary defense, but it is often insufficient during high air pressure events. The community relies on an evacuation plan to move to higher ground when the chief issues an order. Previous extreme weather, such as the category five Cyclone Winston, has demonstrated the severity of these threats.

A 2025 report supported by Habitat for Humanity highlighted the island's vulnerability, noting that approximately 20 percent of homes are in critical condition and only three houses are considered strong enough to withstand a cyclone. Despite these risks, many residents prefer to reinforce their existing homes and defenses rather than abandon their ancestral land.
