Local fee and tax increases approved in Tamm and contested in Vienna

Local authorities in Germany and Austria are implementing fee and tax increases to manage municipal budgets and service costs.

In Tamm, Germany, the municipal council approved an increase in daycare fees. The rates will rise by 4.5 percent starting September 1, 2026. Supporters of the measure noted that the increase is necessary to secure funding from the state compensation fund, which requires municipalities to reach a 20 percent coverage rate. Currently, the coverage stands at twelve percent. Local officials indicated that while personnel costs remain a primary concern, the fee hike is required to avoid losing essential financial resources.

In Vienna, Austria, the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV) is seeking an alliance with the vida union to oppose a planned increase in the local tourism tax. Alexander Ipp, Vice President of the ÖHV, argued that the tax hike burdens international and domestic guests alike. He warned that if hotels cannot pass the full cost to guests, the resulting revenue losses could impact investments and employee stability, potentially endangering jobs in the hospitality sector.
