Perplexity launches local AI agent Portable Computer with NVIDIA

Perplexity, in collaboration with NVIDIA, has launched Portable Computer, a local-first AI agent designed to run directly on user hardware. The system integrates an orchestrator, planner, tool router, scheduler, and a local search index to handle complex workflows like research, coding, and document analysis. By processing tasks locally, the platform aims to enhance data privacy and eliminate cloud-based token costs. Initial support is limited to NVIDIA DGX Spark systems running Linux, with future compatibility planned for NVIDIA RTX GPUs and Windows. The system utilizes models such as Qwen 3.8 27B and Perplexity’s post-trained PPLX 27B, with NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning support expected soon.

Separately, OpenAI has reinstated a 5-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus subscribers using Codex and ChatGPT Work services. This measure, effective August 25, is intended to balance computational load and prevent users from rapidly exhausting their weekly quotas. While Plus users face these short-term limits, OpenAI noted that Pro plan users will remain exempt for the next few months. Additionally, OpenAI has updated ChatGPT Work with a cloud browser feature that allows the agent to perform authenticated website logins using credentials from third-party password managers, expanding its ability to interact with secure professional services.
