Local governance and environmental initiatives in Vietnam
In Phu Tho province, local authorities are integrating Communist Party cell meetings with the resolution of grassroots issues. During recent sessions in Phu Chinh and Thanh Thuy communes, members discussed critical local needs such as rural transportation, irrigation, clean water, and digital skills. Provincial leaders, including Deputy Secretary Bui Duc Hinh and Nguyen Manh Son, emphasized the importance of democracy, accountability, and linking member evaluations to the successful resolution of community concerns.
Meanwhile, Hai Phong is working toward a green city transition by reforming waste management. While urban solid waste collection reaches 95%, the city faces challenges with low source-sorting rates and inconsistent infrastructure. To address this, the Hai Phong City Party Committee has issued a directive to prioritize waste classification at the source. In Ngo Quyen ward, over 88% of households have participated in waste sorting, supported by an interdisciplinary monitoring team using a “green card-yellow card” system to recognize compliant households and remind others.
