Local governance and judicial tenure reforms under discussion
In Lithuania, local residents can influence their immediate environment through seniūnija (elderships) and community councils. While often viewed as formal structures, these administrative units manage practical matters such as road maintenance, public spaces, social assistance, and local cultural initiatives. Active participation in these councils allows citizens to help prioritize local investments, such as street lighting, pedestrian crossings, or playground installations.
Regarding the judiciary, the Judicial Council has called for broader discussion concerning the extension of judges' terms. Following a survey of 510 judges, the results showed a split: 277 judges supported extending powers to age 70 (with an option to retire at 65 with a state pension), while 233 opposed it. Notably, while many supported the principle, only 121 judges expressed a personal desire to serve until 70, whereas 389 indicated they would not seek that option. The Council is tasked with preparing a formal position by October 15 to balance professional competence with generational turnover.
