Local government measures: Nisyros subsidies and UK tourism tax plans

The Municipality of Nisyros has unanimously decided to increase monthly allowances for certain professionals to 300 euros, split equally between housing (150 euros) and food (150 euros). This measure, proposed by Mayor Christofis Koronaeos, aims to support newly appointed teachers for their first five years, substitute teachers, special education staff, and medical and ambulance personnel. The subsidy is intended to help staff manage the high cost of living and housing difficulties on the island.

In the United Kingdom, the government is moving to grant English regional mayors the power to impose local overnight tourism taxes. Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated the measure could be implemented by the end of the next financial year, with local leaders required to present revenue utilization plans by early 2028. Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Angela Rayner stated the funds would be reinvested into local infrastructure and services.

The UK hospitality sector has reacted strongly against the proposal. UKHospitality warned of increased bureaucracy and higher costs for travelers. Citing an Oxford Economics study, industry representatives noted that a potential 5% tax could result in the loss of up to 33,000 jobs and a 2.2 billion pound reduction in economic activity by 2030.
