Local governments consider data center moratoriums amid resource concerns

Local government officials in Lake County and Durham County are considering moratoriums on data center developments following significant public opposition regarding resource consumption.

In Lake County, the Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a code amendment recommending a temporary moratorium on data centers in unincorporated areas. The measure, which proposes an eight-month halt to assess viability, moves to the Zoning, Building, and Development body for further review. Public concern has centered on the Grayslake T5 Data Center project, specifically regarding its potential impact on electricity and water usage.

In Durham County, commissioners held a public hearing on a proposed moratorium that could last through May 2027. The current proposal includes exemptions for facilities smaller than 100,000 square feet, a point of contention for residents who are advocating for a stronger pause without loopholes. While some residents expressed concerns over air pollution and energy consumption, others warned that a moratorium could negatively impact the business community and economic growth within Research Triangle Park.
