Local LLM execution tools and P2P systems enable offline AI

Developments in local Large Language Model (LLM) execution are enabling users to run AI models on private hardware without cloud dependencies. Tools such as Ollama, LM Studio, and Docker Model Runner allow users to host open models locally, serving them via OpenAI-compatible APIs to ensure data privacy and eliminate request costs.

To address the hardware limitations of standard consumer laptops, the AirDrop-LLM system has been developed. This open-source, peer-to-peer (P2P) utility allows multiple heterogeneous devices to pool their RAM, VRAM, and GPU compute over local Wi-Fi or hotspots. By using pipeline-parallel inference, the system splits massive model layers across a cluster of devices, enabling the execution of large 70B parameter models that would otherwise exceed the memory capacity of a single machine.
