Local markets in Szczecin and Jaworzno face uncertainty

Traditional marketplaces in the Polish cities of Szczecin and Jaworzno are facing significant crises, leading to fears of closure or relocation.

In Szczecin, the market at Kiliński Square is experiencing a sharp decline, with approximately 80 percent of retail points currently inactive. Local vendors attribute the downturn to high rents, rising operational costs, and intense competition from large supermarket chains. City councilor Marcin Pawlicki has filed an inquiry requesting that municipal authorities meet with market management to determine whether the goal is to revitalize the area or proceed with its liquidation.

In Jaworzno, vendors at the central market are facing uncertainty regarding their livelihoods as the land is set to be transferred from the Jaworzno Social Housing Association (JTBS) to the city at the end of the year. While there have been mentions of creating a smaller, more intimate marketplace, sellers fear they will lose their designated spots or be forced to operate in less suitable conditions. No formal guarantees have been provided to the traders regarding the continuity of their business operations for the coming year.
