Local municipal initiatives launched in Portugal

The Municipality of Portimão is launching an awareness campaign to protect 16th-century Manueline stonework located in Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles. The historical structures have been repeatedly targeted by vandalism, including graffiti, scratches, and the dumping of waste. While the Portimão Museum's conservation team performs regular cleaning and restoration, the recurring damage necessitates continuous expenditures and labor that officials say could be better utilized for other heritage preservation efforts.

In Mealhada, municipal authorities have begun an operation to combat the spread of pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana). This invasive exotic species poses a threat to local biodiversity and public health. The intervention involves municipal environmental and forestry technicians, along with student volunteers from the Escola Profissional Vasconcellos Lebre. Local officials reminded the public that the possession, cultivation, trade, and transport of this species are prohibited under Portuguese law.
