Spain tests ‘dragon’s teeth’ road markings to reduce speeding

Spain is currently testing a new type of horizontal road markings known as ‘dragon’s teeth’ to combat speeding in high-risk areas. The system consists of a series of triangles painted along the edges of the roadway, typically spanning a length of approximately 30 meters.

These markings utilize an optical illusion to create the perception that the road is narrowing, which encourages drivers to decelerate spontaneously. The trials are being conducted near intersections, pedestrian crossings, and other segments prone to high accident rates. Preliminary results from the experimentation indicate a noticeable decrease in average vehicle speeds in the observed sections. Unlike electronic speed cameras or physical speed bumps, this method relies on visual psychological cues to influence driver behavior.
