Local officials debate effectiveness of new speed limit regulations
Local government officials in North Ayrshire, Scotland, and Donegal, Ireland, have raised concerns regarding the implementation and effectiveness of new speed limit regulations.
In North Ayrshire, Independent Councillor Todd Ferguson expressed apprehension that the decision to make temporary 20mph speed limits permanent may have already been decided by the cabinet without sufficient input from the full council. Ferguson noted that despite public consultations held in July and August, there are significant concerns among residents regarding the process and the restrictions themselves.
In Donegal, councillors have adopted new 2026 speed limit bye-laws following a public review. However, officials such as Councillor Gerry McMonagle and Councillor Michael McClafferty warned that reducing speed limits without strict enforcement will fail to change driver behavior. Suggestions to improve safety included the use of average speed cameras, increased pedestrian crossings, and flashing speed-feedback signs to ensure compliance.
