Local school service and transport funding disputes in Italy
In Marmirolo, opposition councilors have filed an inquiry with Mayor Elena Betteghella regarding the town's exclusion from a regional student transport bonus. While six neighboring municipalities in the Mantua province have allocated funds to subsidize Apam annual school bus passes for the 2026/2027 academic year, Marmirolo has not joined the initiative. Local representatives noted that families face annual costs of approximately 480 euros, a significant burden for households with multiple students.
In the Marmilla region of Sardinia, mayors and school administrators are protesting severe staff shortages and service reductions. The Villamar comprehensive institute, which covers 11 municipalities, has seen its school support staff (ATA) decrease from 40 to 36 employees. These cuts have forced some preschools to close early and left certain school cafeterias without staff. Local leaders are calling for staffing regulations that account for geographic challenges rather than just student enrollment numbers to protect the right to education.
