Tohoku University tops 2026 Hokkaido-Tohoku university rankings
Tohoku University has secured the first place in the 2026 Hokkaido-Tohoku regional rankings of ‘truly strong universities,’ according to a report by Toyo Keizai. The university ranked third nationally among all public universities, trailing only the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University.
The ranking, which evaluates 63 institutions in the region, utilizes quantitative data across four key metrics: education and research capability, employment strength, financial stability, and internationalization. Tohoku University’s high standing is supported by its status as the first designated ‘International Research University’ and its strong performance in research grants and employment rates at major corporations.
Hokkaido University followed in second place, noted for its high internationalization scores, including a high ratio of international students and numerous overseas study agreements. The report highlights how these institutions are adapting to Japan’s shrinking youth population through enhanced research and global engagement.
