Siracusa Mayor faces no-confidence motion following Nexus investigation

A cross-party coalition of 14 city councilors in Siracusa has formally filed a motion of no-confidence against Mayor Francesco Italia. The move follows the Nexus investigation, a judicial inquiry coordinated by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Palermo, which has led to precautionary measures involving local entrepreneurs and the Vice President of the City Council.

The councilors allege institutional paralysis and a lack of transparency regarding anti-corruption audits and the management of migrant hostel contracts. They specifically criticized the Mayor for failing to provide adequate responses during council sessions and for a perceived lack of oversight regarding municipal office functions. The motion will be debated in the council within 30 days.
