Local tree management and regulation debates in Germany
In Vilsbiburg, the Evangelical-Lutheran Church Council has announced the removal of four large, old trees near the church and parsonage. The decision follows an assessment that the tree roots have significantly damaged the courtyard stairs, requiring costly repairs. Additionally, the trees pose a safety risk to nearby buildings during storms. To mitigate environmental impact, the council plans to plant smaller, site-appropriate urban trees that will not damage infrastructure.
In Schulzendorf, the municipal council rejected a proposal by the AfD to amend the tree protection statute. The AfD sought to resolve discrepancies between administrative forms and the existing statute regarding ‘nursery quality’ requirements for replacement plantings. Critics warned against unnecessary changes and potential legal issues, resulting in the motion being defeated with four votes in favor, nine against, and two abstentions.
