Lockheed Martin and Avio partner on solid propellant motor production

Lockheed Martin and Avio have entered into a strategic cooperation agreement for the production of solid propellant motors (SRM), a critical component for several major United States missile systems. The partnership aims to expand and accelerate production capacity within the American industrial supply chain to enhance defense resilience.

Initial production activities will focus on motors for the Extended Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (ER GMLRS) and the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), both of which are central to U.S. Army modernization programs. Manufacturing will take place at the new Avio USA facility in Hurt, Virginia.

Avio has invested over $500 million in new SRM production capacity in the United States to become an open market supplier for various defense sector clients. The agreement provides Lockheed Martin with access to Avio’s production capacity, ensuring greater flexibility and supply continuity amid rising demand from government customers.
