Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems Drive $4.1 B Surge in Defense Startup Funding

Defense contractors worldwide have poured a record $4.1 billion into venture‑capital rounds for military‑technology startups in 2026, according to Dealroom data cited by the Financial Times. The surge reflects a shift toward rapid, disruptive capabilities such as autonomous drones and interceptor missiles, spurred by recent conflicts.

Lockheed Martin announced a minimum $100 million commitment to British and European defence‑tech funds, while UK‑based BAE Systems pledged €50 million (about $57 million) to two European venture funds. The total value of global defence‑sector transactions – including mergers, acquisitions and venture funding – has already topped $40 billion this year, approaching the previous annual high of $59 billion set in 2019.

European partners are also reshaping their defence strategies: Germany and France agreed to integrate conventional forces with France’s nuclear deterrence, and both nations are shifting investment away from large joint hardware programmes toward smaller, technology‑focused enterprises.
