Lockheed Martin and Boeing-Anduril selected for U.S. Army missile program
The U.S. Army has selected Lockheed Martin and a Boeing-Anduril partnership to advance Phase 2 of the IFPC Increment 2 Second Interceptor competition. This program aims to develop a compact, medium-range interceptor designed to combat low-altitude drones and cruise missiles.
The new interceptor is intended to complement the existing Enduring Shield configuration, which currently utilizes AIM-9X missiles. By providing an intermediate defense layer, the program seeks to protect high-end interceptors from being used against less demanding aerial threats, thereby preserving capacity for more significant targets.
The Boeing-Anduril proposal features a compact structure, a solid rocket motor from Anduril Rocket Motor Systems, and an Open Systems Modular Architecture. This architecture allows for updates to seekers, avionics, and software without requiring a complete redesign. Lockheed Martin's involvement follows a multi-billion dollar contract to support U.S. Army missile production.
