Lockheed Martin successfully tests new JR3 training rocket
Lockheed Martin has successfully completed the second flight test of its Joint Reduced Range Rocket (JR3). The test took place at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, where multiple rounds were launched from a HIMARS vehicle to validate range, trajectory, accuracy, and marking payload effects.
Designed as a low-cost training solution for the US Army and its global partners, the JR3 is intended to replace the current Reduced Range Practice Rocket. The system features a modular design built on mature rocket motor technology and includes a 24-round reusable launch pod. This architecture allows for higher training volumes and cost savings by enabling crews to reload launch tubes rather than replacing entire pods after each exercise.
The JR3 is compatible with both HIMARS and M270 launchers, providing a scalable way for crews to conduct realistic live-fire drills under various environmental conditions and range restrictions.
