Lockheed Martin targets sixth-generation capabilities for F-35
Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet has announced an ambition to upgrade the F-35 Lightning II to provide 80% of the capabilities of a sixth-generation fighter at approximately 50% of the cost of a new clean-sheet aircraft. This development strategy is intended to increase air combat power for the United States and its allies through more efficient modernization.
To support this, Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Defense have reached a framework agreement covering a ten-year period. The arrangement aims to facilitate the production of at least 850 F-35 aircraft, targeting an annual production rate of 156 units. This plan includes both U.S. requirements and orders from international customers.
The agreement encompasses aircraft production, spare parts supply, modernization kits, and maintenance and support for the global F-35 fleet. Lockheed Martin intends to invest at least $7 billion of its own resources to support the program. The long-term procurement path is designed to provide supply chain stability, allowing suppliers to improve factories, hire workers, and update software, which may help reduce costs associated with late deliveries and defective components.
