Lockheed Martin to integrate LRASM missiles into B-52 bombers

The U.S. Navy is preparing to contract Lockheed Martin to integrate the AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) into the B-52 Stratofortress bomber. This move is intended to enhance long-range strike capabilities against maritime targets, specifically to bolster U.S. presence and capability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The integration process will involve missile software updates, testing, and failure analysis. While the B-52 already carries various cruise missiles from the JASSM family, the LRASM is specifically adapted to locate and strike high-value vessels within heavily defended maritime environments. The missile utilizes a combination of inertial navigation, GPS, and autonomous target recognition to strike targets while minimizing the carrier's exposure.

With this integration, the B-52 will join the B-1B and the stealth B-2 as part of the U.S. strategic bomber fleet capable of deploying this anti-ship missile. Budgetary plans for fiscal year 2027 include continued work on newer variants of the LRASM and JASSM for the B-52 platform.
