Lockheed Martin to integrate sixth-generation technology into F-35

Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet has unveiled a strategic plan to integrate advanced sixth-generation technologies into the F-35 fighter jet. Developed by the company’s Skunk Works division, the initiative aims to achieve approximately 80 percent of the performance of a completely new sixth-generation aircraft while limiting costs to roughly half of what a new design would require.

To support this modernization, Taiclet proposed a ten-year procurement framework targeting a total of 850 F-35s for the United States, with an annual production rate of 156 aircraft, including international orders. This long-term schedule is intended to stabilize the supply chain—which accounts for over 60 percent of the aircraft's composition—allowing for facility upgrades, increased hiring, and software refinement.

The proposed financial model seeks to drive efficiency by allowing manufacturers to retain savings generated through optimized processes, with pricing managed via a defined indexation system. This structure is expected to encourage immediate investments in sophisticated testing tools and minimize costs associated with defective parts and delivery delays.
