Lockheed Martin unveils PAC-3 ACE and PAC-3 Edge missile variants
Lockheed Martin has unveiled two new variants of the PAC-3 interceptor designed to address different strategic needs: the PAC-3 ACE and the PAC-3 Edge.
The PAC-3 ACE is a low-cost alternative to the PAC-3 MSE. It achieves cost reductions of more than half by replacing expensive components, such as attitude control motors, with more basic parts and utilizing a single-pulse rocket motor. Instead of relying on kinetic impact, the ACE uses a fragmentation warhead to neutralize targets. While compatible with the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), some experts have raised questions regarding its effectiveness in ballistic missile defense compared to older models.
The PAC-3 Edge is being developed for the US Army Future Interceptor program to counter sophisticated threats, including hypersonic missiles. This variant utilizes advanced technologies such as a new seeker, enhanced flight control, and a multi-pulse solid rocket motor designed by Northrop Grumman. Development and testing for the PAC-3 Edge are scheduled to begin in 2027, with an expected entry into service by 2031.
