Lockheed Martin unveils PAC-3 Edge hypersonic interceptor

Lockheed Martin has introduced the PAC-3 Edge, a new interceptor designed for the U.S. Army to counter advanced ballistic and hypersonic threats. The system is part of the Army’s Future Interceptor program and is based on the existing PAC-3 missile family.

The PAC-3 Edge features an upgraded guidance system and an enhanced multi-pulse solid rocket motor provided by Northrop Grumman. These improvements are intended to provide greater range, altitude, and maneuverability compared to current PAC-3 interceptors. While specific maximum speeds and ranges have not been disclosed, the company expects testing to begin in 2027, with the goal of having the system operational by 2031.

This development comes amid high demand for air defense munitions to replenish stocks used in conflicts such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East. Lockheed Martin aims for a full production rate of approximately 2,000 units per year, a volume comparable to the PAC-3 MSE. The company has invested $250 million in its Strigo Product Center to expand production capacity and develop future anti-missile technologies.
