Lockheed Martin unveils PAC-3 Edge to counter hypersonic threats

Lockheed Martin has unveiled the PAC-3 Edge, a next-generation interceptor designed to counter hypersonic and advanced missile threats. Developed for the U.S. Army’s Future Interceptor program, the missile aims to provide enhanced air defense capabilities by engaging targets at higher altitudes and longer ranges than current systems.

The PAC-3 Edge builds upon the combat-proven PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) platform but introduces three critical technological upgrades: a new seeker developed by Lockheed Martin’s Strigo Product Center, improved flight-control systems, and a multi-pulse solid rocket motor supplied by Northrop Grumman. These enhancements are intended to provide the agility and energy required to intercept maneuvering, high-speed threats.

Lockheed Martin has invested approximately $250 million in the Strigo Product Center to support seeker development, with total investment for the technology potentially reaching $800 million. The company expects the production cost of the PAC-3 Edge to remain comparable to the existing PAC-3 MSE. Testing is scheduled to begin in 2027, with a target for operational deployment by 2031.
