Lockland, Ohio, transformed by Mauritanian migrant surge

The town of Lockland, Ohio, located on the outskirts of Cincinnati, has undergone a significant transformation due to an influx of migrants, primarily from Mauritania. This shift is part of a broader trend involving an unprecedented surge of 4.7 million border crossings between October 2018 and July 2025, with migrants arriving from more than 150 different countries.

Many of these individuals arrived seeking asylum to escape persecution from authoritarian governments. While many initially relied on food banks and crowded housing, many have since secured work permits and jobs. For example, Samba Diallo works long hours at a meatpacking plant, while others have transitioned from shared apartments to purchasing homes.

Local community members have also become integrated into this process. Vincent Wilson, who runs a local shop called Bikes and Stuff, assists community members with navigating the U.S. immigration bureaucracy and attending check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
