Locride-Rome rail service cancellation prompts Senate inquiry
The cancellation of the Locride-Rome intercity train service has prompted a formal inquiry in the Italian Senate. Local leaders, including Roccella Mayor Vittorio Zito and Calabria Governor Roberto Occhiuto, are advocating for the “Gelsomini Link” plan to establish a permanent, year-round connection between the Locride area and the capital.
Proponents argue that the service must move beyond seasonal summer availability to support the fundamental mobility rights of local residents, students, and workers. The proposed solution involves rerouting a pair of Intercity trains currently operating on the Tyrrhenian line to the Ionian line, ensuring a stable and structural link for the community.
