Loggerhead turtle attacks swimmers near Kaštela, Croatia

A loggerhead turtle has been causing concern near the beaches of Kaštela, Croatia, following a series of unusual attacks on swimmers. Since July 22, at least five biting incidents have been reported, with the most recent occurring on August 9 at Miljenko and Dobrila beach in Kaštela Lukšić.

Witnesses describe the turtle approaching people from behind in shallow waters and biting them, sometimes causing wounds that require medical attention and stitches. Victims have been advised to seek medical help and tetanus vaccinations. Local swimmers have expressed growing unease, noting that the animal appears to attack even when not provoked or touched.

Experts from the Oceanographic Institute in Split state that this behavior is highly atypical for loggerhead turtles, which are generally not aggressive and typically flee from humans or boats. While the turtle is a strictly protected species and remains in its natural habitat, residents are calling for a solution that ensures both public safety and the protection of the animal.
