Loggerhead turtles released into the Mediterranean after head-starting programs
Loggerhead turtles have been returned to the sea in the Alicante province of Spain following specialized growth programs designed to increase their survival rates.
In Nules, the Fundación Azul Marino released five turtles at l’Alcudia beach. These specimens, which grew from 16 grams to 3.3 kilograms over a year, were part of the ‘Head-Starting’ program managed by the Fundación Oceanogràfic. The release, which was previously delayed due to a red weather alert, concluded the 2025 release cycle for nests found in the province.
In Benidorm, seven turtles born in August 2025 at Levante beach were released at Poniente beach. These turtles spent 14 months under the care of l’Oceanogràfic in Valencia. The release event included approximately 150 primary school students as part of an environmental awareness initiative.
Authorities emphasize that the Head-Starting program provides essential nutrition and care during the species' most vulnerable life stages. Conservationists urge the public to report nesting activity to emergency services and to minimize light and noise pollution on beaches to protect nesting sites.
