Logistics industry shifts toward AI-driven automation and Logistics 4.0

The logistics industry is undergoing a significant transformation toward ‘Logistics 4.0,’ characterized by the integration of AI, robotics, and autonomous systems to move from labor-intensive services to data-driven, automated industries.

Roland Berger’s Seiji Onozuka describes this evolution through two key concepts: ‘temanaku-ka’ (minimizing effort through Physical AI) and ‘tsunagaru-ka’ (connectivity through AI Orchestration). The former involves replacing human tasks with autonomous trucks, drones, and warehouse robots to reduce reliance on physical strength and specialized skills. The latter focuses on connecting logistics functions across company boundaries to optimize demand forecasting, resource matching, and risk management.

In support of these industry shifts, Logisteed has released a guide on the ‘laws of success for logistics automation.’ The document addresses common challenges, such as the limitations of ‘partial optimization’ where equipment and system layouts are not integrated. It advocates for a ‘Trinity Approach’ to help companies design comprehensive automation strategies that combine equipment, systems, and operations effectively.
