Logistics KPIs and Status‑Driven Settlement Workflows Improve Delivery and Payments

Effective logistics management relies on a small set of performance indicators that detect risk early in the shipping process. Useful KPIs are tied to specific milestones—such as cargo ready, container availability, customs release, or final delivery—have clearly assigned owners, include time thresholds that trigger actions, and connect to recovery playbooks. Metrics like on‑time‑in‑full (OTIF), milestone variance, and ETA confidence enable managers, freight forwarders, 3PLs and carriers to intervene before a delay becomes a missed appointment.

Status‑driven settlement workflows link these operational milestones to financial processes. A transportation management system (TMS) automatically moves a shipment to billing review when proof of delivery is confirmed, pauses settlement for missing documents, and updates carrier payables when detention approvals are recorded. By aligning shipment status with accounting cycles, firms reduce manual handoffs, improve visibility of outstanding costs and accruals, and ensure revenue and expenses are recorded in the correct period, streamlining weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting for brokers and carriers alike.
