Logistics Museum hosts ‘Transport by Horse’ exhibition

The Logistics Museum in Tokyo is hosting a special exhibition titled ‘Transport by Horse,’ running from October 20 through December 20. The exhibition focuses on the historical role of horses in supporting daily life and transportation until the rise of motorization around 1950.

A highlight of the event is the display of ornate and valuable horse decorations from the Kyoto Bashaku (horse-based transport workers) families ‘Yamashiroya’ and ‘Kameya.’ This marks the first time in 25 years that decorations from both families have been exhibited together.

The exhibition is organized into several sections, including Edo-period highway transport, Meiji-era horse-drawn transport, and the role of horses in freight collection and delivery. Additionally, the museum will host film screenings related to modern horse-based transport techniques, such as ‘From the Forest of Satoma,’ which explores traditional horse-logging technologies.
